I recently took a class at the annual North Carolina Quilt Symposium, which this year was held in Asheville, relatively close to where I live. The class was taught by Rosalie Dace, an art quilter who lives in South Africa. The focus was on techniques for putting lines into quilts. Since she is an art quilter, there were many techniques that wouldn’t be used in utility quilts, but it was fun to try them out anyway.
Here are a couple of Rosalie’s quilts that were on display at NCQS.
You can see more on her website.
And here are the items I made in class with her. The first is not intended to be a finished piece; it was just made to try out various techniques.
I doubt this next block will be part of a quilt any time soon, but it was fun to make.
Later on I’ll have pictures of quilts made by some of the other teachers. When I saw them, I wished I had been able to take more than one class!
This class must have been a wonderful experience. Thank you for iinforming me about this artist. Her work is beautiful. The pieces you made are also beautiful.
Thank you 😊 it was fun
I took a similar class at Sisters around 5 years ago. She is a fascinating artist and instructor. I’ve used a technique or two from it. Probably if I were to take it again I’d learn and use more. Saturation strikes after a couple.
I agree about saturation. It was a one day class and, although she kept saying, “I wish we had more time!” I thought it was about right.
Excellent glimpse into the (he)art of another master quilter…hope to see some of your work using ‘new’ techniques soon!
Yep, coming right up! Thanks for commenting 🙂
I met Rosalie a couple of times as she comes to Sisters a lot and she is an honorary member of our Central Oregon SAQA group – her talent is amazing! Your talent is amazing too – love your pieces!
Thanks, Tierney!
How large is your last block? It’s a keeper! I love the citrus green shards splitting through the greys and purples. Bet you can find just the right way to use it!
It’s only about 12”. For now it goes in the orphan pile, but nothing is wasted. And now I think of it, that’s an idea for another post 😁
I am so glad I found your blog. Lovely pieces from the Rosalie Dace workshop. I was lucky enough to attend one of her classes in South Africa — a very inspiring teacher
Thanks for commenting. I was amazed at how much Rosalee travels! She is indeed a wonderful teacher.
Not yet. Tonight is the champagne and chocolate reception opening the Vermont Quilt Festival!
