I first mentioned this quilt when I spent a lot of time cutting squares of very particular colors for the Postcard From Sweden pattern. (Here, if you want to read that post.)
After cutting all the squares and looking at the layout in the pattern, I decided to change it up. I put more of the blue at the top, green at the bottom, yellow in the middle, with the idea of imitating a sunrise.
I made a quilt with a similar idea a couple of years ago. I chuckle about it because some people call it “perseveration” when you repeat an idea like this, but if you’re an artist it’s called “working in a series” 😀
Here is the previous quilt:
And here are some close-ups of Swedish Sunrise.

Your quilt definately has more of a sunrise feel to it with that layout, and with that arrangement the viewer’s eyes get to rest for a moment. Those blocks must have taken a few turns around the design wall before you got them exactly right!
Yes, those blocks did wander a lot before coming to rest–thank goodness for a design wall!
I love your color arrangement! Beautiful way to balance the colors. My eye is drawn to the point where the orange / red meet up with the greens in the lower left. Stunning.
Thank you 😀
Of course you changed it up! Not for the sake of changing it up, but because it begged to be changed and you the artist listened.
Is Swedish Sunrise the final piece in your ‘series?’ Or will there be more forthcoming?
Haha. I think I may perseverate some more 😀
Both versions are lovely. The latest is definitely a sunrise
Thank you!
Those are wonderful pieces. The Sunrise one is very wonderful!
Thank you 😀
Making a series is a great idea; keep something constant and change others and see how many you can do. I await . . .
Thanks!
It’s lovely! I like the original Postcards from Sweden, AND I like your modifications to make Swedish Sunrise. Makes me curious… have you ever been to Sweden? That’s a place I’d like to visit. Just got my passport renvewed, after a 12-1/2 week wait. Now I can go places.
No, never been to Sweden but it does sound interesting!
Such careful work with colour and corners.
There’s another word for trying things out in different versions — iteration
Ah yes, iteration sounds better than perseveration! I was a psychologist long ago, which is where the perseveration idea comes from. Ha!
Love the postcard from Sweden and variations! Is it best to cut the squares a little larger and trim to size?If so, what size is best?
I made the blocks a little bigger following the instructions with my Tucker Trimmer I tool. I no longer recall the size of the finished HSTs, but I do know the Tucker Trimmer suggestions starting with squares 1″ larger than the size of the finished HST blocks. Have fun!
Thanks so much!
