Green Dot

I had a few fat quarters of Lotta Jansdotter fabric left from many years ago and thought I would make a “Turning Twenty Again” quilt from them. Although that pattern almost always produces something nice, the proportion of the various prints didn’t work out well this time. The quilt looks like it has measles.

On the theory of “if it doesn’t work, cut it up” I did cut it up and added some bright green. I like this a lot better.

The binding will be bright green to hold all the craziness in, and I trust some kid at Ronald McDonald House will enjoy it.

Do you cut up things that aren’t working? Or give them a time out? Or give them away?

  1. That’s a creative solution, Mary! Time out usually works (last week I changed a border and now it’s just right). Sometimes abandonment is the only thing that will free both physical and mental space.

P.S. I have a piece of fabric by that designer. It’s a weird taupe-gray that doesn’t seem to go with anything.

  2. I’m a definite cutter upper. I’ve done it many times over the years with stuff that wasn’t working. Really love what you have done here. It might also have worked if you’d done match sticks or wedges of green throughout.

  3. You are the boldest cutter-upper I know. I tend to frown, wad it up and throw it in a cupboard until it resurfaces, chicken-that-I-am. But I love the giant green dot…almost like a PacMan-flavored design, going around the maze. Love it!

  4. Ha, ha… a quilt with measles. You certainly described it well. I adore what you did with it though! My goodness. That electric green makes the whole thing work, especially in those fun shapes. I love how it turned out. And yes, I have cut up a quilt top I’m not happy with. That’s how my recent finish, “Cypher,” came about – drunkard’s path blocks that were b-o-r-i-n-g. Slashing improved them dramatically. I adore a slashed quilt. Great work, Mary!
