Lucky Stars

This top was made as a sample for teaching the quilt at Studio Stitch. I chose fabric from my 30s reproduction box because the stuff in that box needs to move on out of here.

The pattern is Lucky Stars, by Atkinson Designs, which I’ve made many times. (Studio Stitch will be getting it in soon if you need a copy.) The pattern is well designed and illustrated. Although it’s intended for fat quarters, there are instructions for using scraps as well.

I made the 60 x 60 size and added 5″ borders top and bottom because Flying Horse Farms needs quilts 60 x 70. It took about a week to piece it, but it was quite a busy week so usually this is faster.

What’s your favorite easy quilt pattern?

  1. Lucky Stars looks great in 30’s prints. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would to empty the 30’s bin. I put the very last in a box and contributed it to the guild raffle….but somehow there are pieces here and there in my stash.

Favorite easy quilt pattern? One that I’ve made several times, and might make again, is Bonnie Hunter’s Random Ohio Stars. It can be made from two sizes of any block (6″ and 12″ in her design but it could also be 4.5″ and 9″). Right now I’m perusing Villa Rosa Designs because I’ve signed up for their Six Quilts in Six Weeks challenge. VRDs are easy piecing that lets the fabric do the work which is a good creative exercise for me.

    • Thanks for letting me know about the Villa Rosa challenge. I’m not up for it, since mostly I don’t quilt my own creations, but I do love VRD designs. Hard to beat relatively easy quilts and inexpensive patterns! I’ve added extra blocks and borders to several to make them big enough for donation.

  2. Stars are always a favorite, and your scrap version is terrific.

I can’t say I have a favorite, easy pattern, but I look through my stash of physical and PDF files of patterns when I need something quick. You’ve given me another to look for and keep on hand. Thank you!

  3. That is lovely. I don’t know that I have a favourite easy quilt but I am making a rail fence at the moment and it is coming together so fast.
