While at Mid-Atlantic Quiltfest (MAQF), I took a class with Meryl Ann Butler, who was teaching “Innovative Techniques for Wearables and Art Quilts”. You can see some of her work here–scroll down past the workshop (which has already started) to see some of her creations.
And here is a photo I took of her winning entry in the wearable category at MAQF. My picture doesn’t do it justice, but you get the idea.
For detail, here are some pieces shown in her workshop. She has many beautiful techniques for embellishment.
Meryl Ann makes good use of unique panels; here are a couple of examples. I believe the second one is a student creation, but I’m sorry to say I lost track.
Of course I haven’t made anything as fantastic (yet), but I did come home and add a decorative collar to a shirt I had just made.
I recommend Meryl Ann’s workshops if you have any interest. She was patient and thorough, and has many, many beautiful ideas for embellishing clothing. Of course, these ideas would look great on quilts, too.

Beautiful! The aboriginal prints work very well with her design. I still have all of the Judy Murrah Jacket Jazz books, though I haven’t made anything from them.
Hi Nann, Now that you mention them, I remember those books. If I ever had them, I don’t now. But of course there’s nothing new under the sun! Cheers! Mary

Ha! I remember those books, now that you mention them 😀
I had those books, and I did make a couple of projects from them. Her directions were clear and left lots of room for creativity. 🙂
They look amazing. Not sure where I would wear any of them, but very cool designs
Aha! One wears them to quilt shows! And possibly to parties, out to dinner, and who knows where else! Maybe an excuse to ramp up social occasions!
Amazing work on those wearables! We’ll be looking forward to seeing your new quilting themed wardrobe in the future 🙂
I really hate making clothing for myself, for several reasons, so I’m hoping to be able to embellish ready-to-wear.
How fun for you to enjoy such an opportunity. The details in her pieces are amazing. I hope you enjoy wearing your new top – that tone-on-tone print looks very familiar. 🙂
Haha! Yes, it’s amazing how often we see fabric on other people’s sites that looks amazingly familiar. It has turned warm here, so I may not wear that top until next fall.
I like your collar 😊
Thanks 😀
Love the collar on your new shirt, and did I see a date on the back? I think that is a brilliant idea, too. I think it would be great if embellished wearables made a comeback, as I could wear my two vests and my quilt jacket with pride. After seeing her work, I can see I’d need to get out some beads and embroidery floss and jazz them up a bit!
Now I need to make a short sleeved shirt to embellish so I can wear it this summer!
