Variety

Here are some projects my friends and I are working on, or plan to work on in the coming year. It’s not that we’re abandoning our many “regular” quilt projects; we’re considering these items as ways to try out some new things. Maybe you’ll get some new ideas, too!

One of my friends is a collage maker, and she got me going on this Laura Heine design, which is unfinished at this time.

Another friend just made this wonderful hummingbird from a Legit Kit.

This version of the Legit Kit, complete with batiks in the amounts needed, was ordered from Quilt A Bit in Greenacres, Florida (U.S.). The shop has a few kits on their website, but you can also phone and ask for Dawn to find out if they have or will make the kit you’re interested in. They use the Legit Kit pattern, which is included in their kit, but Quilt A Bit kits with batiks rather than the Kona cottons the Legit Kit people use. I’m a fan of the batik option!

Another friend has decided the solution for her EPP (English Paper Piecing) issues is to make BIG pieces! She’s cutting her scraps all to the size she needs for these hexies!

Which brings us to another larger-size EPP project. We’re going to try out the bowls in this pattern.

And here’s a book we want to try!

Finally, a couple of us found this fabric and finished the bolt. Now we have to design something to do with it.

This is one of Brigitte Heitland’s Zen Chic fabrics for Moda

Stay tuned, and please share any new ideas you have! I’m always looking for something new to learn.

  1. What a variety of projects you and your friends selected! I have seen several of Laura Heine’s collage designs, and they’re nice. As for EPP… I’m sort of over it. After making Tula Nova, and then Prudence, I seemed to have burned myself out. I wish I could suggest a great idea for something inspirational for ya’ll but I’m topped out. It’s back to “Ye Old WIPs” list for me.

  2. I guess I have to ask, Are there new ideas? I say that b/c I was reading the NYTimes (from October–just catching up) about Dyani White Hawk who is busy making half-square rectangles, but identifying them as being a Lakota motif. I was not surprised that something so basic in our quilting world shows up in other places. I think what I admire in your grouping is how many are taking tried-and-true and giving them a twist: larger hexies, a fabric for inspiration, different fabrics used in a well-known kit.

I appreciate this post! I think, as Linda said, we all get tired of what we are working on and need a shift to refresh our brains and our outlook. And so, I’ll be on the lookout at Road to California in three weeks, for what others might present as new or novel. Thanks for this!

    • I’m a firm believer that “there is nothing new under the sun”, so heck no these are not new ideas. And I wish I could go to Road to California with you–please post lots of pictures!

    • Hi Tierney! Happy new year (tomorrow). I think Laura Heine is an acquired taste, and I did not acquire it doing this one. However, I have friends who are addicted, and I agree that the collages are fun. I look forward to seeing what you decide to try.
