A Surprise for My Sweetie

A friend and I found some good fabric with tools at a quilt show recently, so of course we bought it, since our husbands are both “handy”. Actually, they’re both pretty good woodworkers.

A lot of woodworking-themed or tool-themed fabric is way too “cute” but this had panels of realistic-looking tools. The fabric is part of a line from Quilting Treasures, if you want to look for it. Be aware that the panels are NOT printed square! I decided just to not worry about it.

I tried out several designs and finally settled on a simple one.

I made the top when my sweetie was away at a woodworking show (how appropriate) and a friend quilted it with a woodgrain texture.

Then I put the binding on while my husband was at another woodworking event, and sneaked it into one of his work rooms, where he has a large leather chair.

He seems to like it, and verified that it is, indeed, washable. Workshops can get dusty!

  1. How special! It’s so nice that your husband has such a worthwhile hobby, and that you could reflect that in something made according to your hobby! It’s great that the quilt can be used at his leather chair, especially as the weather gets colder. Really, it’s the perfect gift. You did a very nice job.

  2. I know what you mean about panel fabrics not being true to grain…ya just gotta dive in and make it work without warping the end product. And your end product looks terrific! What a fun secret project you had up your sleeve.

  3. I love how you decided to not worry about the off-kilter blocks, and it still came out to be a terrific quilt! There’s a lesson in here somewhere and we should all pay attention to it. BTW, did you know I’ve been using Affinity for several years? I think I’m about at my Peter Princple level with it, but I use it quite a lot. Good luck with yours! (Elizabeth E.)

    • Thank you! I knew you used Affinity something, but thought it was mainly the drawing program for your illustrations. I appreciate that you told me about it a couple of years ago.
