First, I mentioned that I’m taking Tara Faughnan’s Block Studies class, here. The first assignment was to make designs with hourglass blocks. Here are mine so far. These are large blocks, not finished quilts, and they’re experimental..
I don’t know that I’ve learned/done anything great yet, but I do know I wouldn’t have taken the time to experiment without this class, so it’s already worthwhile.
After “playing” with those, I got the binding on the second quilt for the boys’ bunk beds. (The first one is here.)

The colours in the first of hour glass blocks are so striking.
I agree that one always learns something when doing a class.
Ha! Tara chose the palette, and her lecture this month was on how she chooses her palettes! I was happy to hear that she chooses her colors intuitively, because that’s the way I do it. I’ve found the color wheel approach less useful, despite having heard many lectures about it.
Tara obviously hit the spot for you. I took struggle with the colour wheel 😄
too
Playing frees us up to do the more ‘serious stuff’ (for lack of a better phrase) But then, you already know that! 🙂
And isn’t it funny that I need to take a class to have play time!
LOL!
I like your large bold color big block series!
Thanks. The BQ patterns are great for big prints.
I tend to experiment on paper more than with sewn pieces. Maybe I’ll try this way.
One time when I made a quilt from Jane Sassaman’s fabric I photocopied (in color) the fabric to experiment with designs, for obvious reasons. However, I’m enjoying these color experiments just for their own sake. I always enjoy learning something, even if I don’t think I’ll use it–you never know!
