I’ve been making some smaller quilts–call them art quilts if you like–just for fun. I love the process of designing, and sometimes I just want to make a bunch of smaller things for the practice.
I’ve had these African wax fabrics for quite a while, intending to use them–you know the story!
So when a friend was over to play recently, we cut some BIG circles (using Daisy Aschehoug’s templates) and I decided to use some of these special fabrics.
There were a LOT of experiments!
The eventual conclusion was that the 4 circles I had made would need to be 4 separate quilts! Here are the first two tops.
They’re only about 45″ square, so I may try hand quilting them.

Very nice! What a good way to use those larger prints, that are often the nature of African wax fabrics. I have some too, and quickly discovered that cutting them in too-small pieces wasn’t the best way to show them off. I enjoy seeing your creativity in the way you put these fabrics together, and especially appreciate how you used one print as border.
Thanks, Linda. A friend and I took a class about using African prints, but the pattern suggested in the class was a little “tame” for my taste–ha!
Agreed!!! (your friend)
There’s nothing quite like African wax prints for boldness and you have showcased this beautifully.
Enjoy hand quilting them 🙃
Very cool. At 45 inches I’d definitely quilt them myself even if it is just on my machine but hand quilting can be very relaxing once you get in the flow of it.
We’ll see whether it’s machine, hand, or a combination of quilting. My latest idea is to do some machine quilting to stabilize it, then accent with hand quilting.
This is a wonderful way to showcase these prints. And you found a way to integrate the circular with the angular without it feeling like just a circle-in-a-box.
Thanks. I’m trying to challenge myself more, with mixed results as expected, but I do like these so far.
Oh, these are fabulous! I love how differently they look using your fabrics — a good call to separate them into the four. Love them!
Thanks. These were fun, which we need these days!
Oooh! Glad to be back at blogging and see what you whip up next! Nice experiment with cool fabrics, love the circles!
Thanks, Tierney! I’m so glad you’re back!
Wow! Your circles are so good and have such great visual appeal! Love seeing what you created.
Those circles were made using Daisy Aschehoug’s big templates, which are fun!
